How to watch The Case Against Adnan Syed

The Case Against Adnan Syed is a four-part HBO documentary series that investigates the 1999 murder of Baltimore county student Hae Min Lee and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed.

What is The Case Against Adnan Syed about?

In January 1999, 18-year-old Woodlawn High School student Hae Min Lee was reported missing by her parents. Four weeks later, her body was found at nearby city park, killed by manual strangulation. Her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed, also from the same school, was arrested, then convicted of first-degree murder and given a life sentence of 30-plus years, which he is currently serving.

The case was the subject of the first season of the podcast Serial , which released in 2014 and instantly became a global phenomenon. It retraces the days leading up to Lee’s murder, featuring interviews with the different people and law officials involved during that time. Apart from that, it also presents new evidence that wasn’t available when the case went to trial almost 15 years earlier, proving that Syed could have been wrongfully convicted.

What happened since?

After the success of the podcast, in June 2016, Baltimore Circuit Court vacated Adnan Syed’s conviction and granted him a new trial after uncovering new evidence and hearing from an alibi that vouched for Adnan’s innocence.

The State of Maryland then appealed the lower court judge’s ruling, but on 29 March 2018, the Court of Special Appeals ruled to vacate Syed’s conviction and granted him a retrial.

Then, on 9 March 2019, a day before the first part of The Case Against Adnan Syed was due to air in the US, the same court overturned the ruling - by a 4-3 vote - denying Syed a new trial.

Syed's attorney, Justin Brown, said they were devastated by the decision but will not give up, and are exploring other avenues of relief.
