When I think about rattan, the first thing that comes to mind is my grandma. Which is odd, because she doesn’t necessarily have any rattan furniture—it’s just that I associate rattan with, I don’t know, cute grandmas. I mean it doesn’t get any more rattan than the 1980s Old Florida living room from The Golden Girls , right? But with the widespread interest in the boho chic/haute hippie sense of style (think Justina Blakeney of The Jungalow, Anthropologie, and Gypset Style), rattan is experiencing a major overhaul.

Rattan is a type of climbing palm tree, and its stems are often used to make furniture pieces whose natural qualities connote an island somewhere in the South Pacific. Designers like Celerie Kemble are taking the tropical material historically used for patio furniture and making it modern and chic—bringing the outside in (and in some cases as you’ll read below, bringing the inside out). Because bedrooms should be a place where you retreat to, using rattan beds is a great way to make you feel like you’re on a permanent vacation. Take a look at these rattan beds and headboards—they’ll give your space an organic vibe that will hopefully make you as obsessed with them as I am!

If you could have seen the before picture of this little girl’s room (actually, you can ), you’d be floored by the difference a little color makes! Amber Interiors took the room from drab to fab with a bold rug and painterly wallpaper, and the rattan bed put the boho chic quality of the room over the edge (in the best way possible).

Alex Evjen of Ave Styles ‘ master bedroom (also pictured at top) is a modern boho sanctuary. It features the same bed as the last room, but with a slightly more sophisticated lean thanks to the solid teal wall behind it, the simple white linens and draperies, and the gold pendant.

Sometimes rattan beds are so tightly woven that they might feel heavy in a room or overly tropical. But this vintage daybed, in Emily Henderson’s baby nursery , has an airy frame that keeps the entire room feeling light along with cloud-like white design elements, blush accents, and a forest-y wallcovering.

This room is part of a renovation by Claire of Centered by Design . It’s her guest bedroom, and you’d never guess it’s inside of a 1932 Tudor-style brick bungalow. The Benjamin Moore blue Solitude paint on the walls gives the room a fresh update, but the whimsical rattan headboard is the star of the show.

Here’s another whimsical headboard, but this one featured on Decoist has a different aesthetic because of the gallery wall surrounding it, complete with vintage plates and luggage used as art.

Gray Malin is synonymous with the word beach, so it’s no surprise that when he teamed up with Serena & Lily to redesign his guest bedroom , coastal cabana was the design direction they decided on. And with that, of course, Jack and Jill-style twin rattan beds. They give the room texture, and the sandy hues complement the beachy palette of Malin’s Man in Red Shorts, Bora Bora and Girl in Pink, Bora Bora photos.

And finally, another kids room that has all the chic, fresh sophistication I’d want in order for it to feel cohesive with the rest of my house but without losing a sense of fun and playfulness—this time, designed by Becki Owens . And best of all, the rattan beds are certainly something the kids can grow with.
